John Salmon Ford (May 26 1815 – November 3 1897), better known as John "Rip" Ford, was member of the Republic of Texas Congress and later of the State Senate, Texas Ranger, Confederate officer, and journalist. He commanded the Confederate forces in the last battle of the American Civil War, the Battle of Palmito Ranch on May 12-13, 1865. It was a Confederate victory, but it occurred after the surrender of all Texas armies and so had no effect on the outcome of the war. It is considered the last major confrontation of the Civil War. John Philo Hoyt (October 6, 1841 ? August 27, 1926) was an American politician and jurist. Born News David and Susan Hoyt in Augustinburg, Ashtabula County, Ohio, Hoyt served in the Union Army for the four years of the American Civil War. After the Civil War, Hoyt returned to Ohio, enrolled in law school, and was admitted to the bar one year later in 1867. He practiced in Michigan from 1868 to 1878, where he was elected to the Michigan State House of Representatives and served a term as Speaker of the House.
